Naxos Town, the old and the new
What is uniquely impressive about Naxos Town is the hill upon which it has been built, that has given it a superimposed position and at the same time a huge advantage; it spreads along its main port and strategically overlooks the water channel between Naxos and Paros.
No wonder why this beautiful capital has a castle to protect it and an Old Town built around its tall walls. Let’s be realistic, there are not many islands around the world to be proud of having so much history. Take your pick; the Portara is visible even before you step on Naxos soil, the Medieval Castle, the Old Town, the Sanctuary of Dionysus (Yria), the Catholic Cathedral, Panagia Pantanassa church, Panagia Myrtidiotissa, the Archaeological Museum and many more…
Taking a walk in the Old Town is not only romantic but also rewarding. Many of the old houses have been converted into beautiful café or restaurants, ideally blending with their surroundings, transforming the area into a photographer’s paradise. Do not forget to spend some of your precious time at the small shops with clothes, handcrafted objects or various souvenirs. Not to mention that a long walk along the alleyways will boost your appetite and burn some calories at the same time.
There is a clear contrast between the two towns
The traditional, romantic style of the Old Town with its quiet atmosphere is in perfect contrast with the modern and vibrant new town. Having them both within your reach is what makes Naxos Town even more interesting.
All Sailing Tour boats are privileged enough to have this impressive view of the Town, the Castle and the Portara at the same time. You will find us there when we return from our daily sailing tours, after 18:00 each afternoon. Come to share this magnificent view with us.
