One of the greatest pleasures of holidays is food. And since it is only then that we have all the time in the world, holidays is also the right time to explore new tastes and experience the delights or failures of the unknown. Of course, the search for new tastes is not a desired endeavor for everyone. As a friend of mine makes clear: “when it comes to food, it is better to be safe than sorry”.
Naxos food is known not only for its good ingredients but also for its variety. Over the years, many restaurants and taverns have brought to Naxos flavours from all over the world, transforming the island to an international gastronomic destination. Now, apart from the “famous the world over” potato, Naxos has many more to offer.
Greek and Italian food dominate on the island. You can enjoy anything from delicious spanakopita, fluffy kolokythokeftedes and decadent souvlaki to fantastic pizzas and paellas.
You will find most restaurants on Naxos Town but there are many more at the most famous beaches and villages. It is very common for tourists to drive for several kilometres in order to enjoy their favourite meal at Eggares, Filoti, Apeiranthos or even Moutsouna.
While on Naxos, make sure you try as much of that great Naxian wine. It has improved greatly with time. Many young people have been involved with the production of good quality wine, using improved methods of cultivating the vineyards and thus making their produce known not only to the rest of Greece but also to Europe. As for the cheese, once you start it will be hard to control yourself. There are so many varieties and different ways to enjoy them; it will make your head spin!
